SMS culture due to under developed broadband infrastructure?

SMS (Short Messaging System); which some of you call mobile TEXT messaging, is very popular among Asian especially for Indonesian.

I am very lucky to live in Jakarta where broadband is available. It really makes my day, checking email, chatting, blogging, posting and such. Unfortunately 95% of Indonesian people still have not enjoyed the luxury of broadband yet for the following reasons:
  1. Its NOT yet available in the rural area
  2. Rural area (small town) people have lower buying power
  3. Rural area (small town) people do not need broadband !?
  4. Indonesian goverment are a bunch of old fashion people (and stupid?) who don't know the importance of broadband. Let alone understand what I am talking about.
Yes, and because of the scarcity of broadband availability, most of us have to use SMS (Short Messaging System). NO WONDER many of Indonesian are not able to post their thoughts in a long and ellaborated form. They so get used to "shorty". D u udstnd m? (do you understand me?).

But how about for some Asian countries like Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan who have more developed broadband infrastructure then us (Indonesia). Why are they so hook up with SMS? Interesting phenomena, anyone would like to do research on this interesting behavior?
